My 1st Garden Box

OK, so the recovering of the couch has been put indefinitely on the back burner. Once I realized my material would cost almost as much as a new couch, I went out, bought a slip cover, and washed my hands of the whole affair.

So of all the projects and ideas flying around my head which would be the next one to land?

Just so happens kiddo started a pumpkin seed in class and brought it home a few days ago. I couldn't ask for better project inspiration.

So gardening it is.

I've had it in my mind for weeks to start making a series of garden boxes, in a variety of shapes and sizes, to put along the West wall in our backyard. A good space with a mix of exposure.

Yesterday I was very excited to get going. So with kiddo in one hand and a list of needed supplies in the other I set off to a hardware store. It turned out to be a bit of a mess for me. You can't just use any old wood, you can only use non-treated stuff. Otherwise the chemicals will seep into your soil and into your home grown food, not so good. Anyway, I couldn't decipher which lumber wasn't treated and I couldn't get any assistance, so I left, frustrated and defeated.

Feeling a bit bummed about the possibility of another project falling through, I got up this morning and tried again. Only this time I went to a different hardware store. Ten steps through the door and someone asked if I needed assistance. Oh heck yeah, my new buddy, and within 15 minutes my wood was being measured and cut to size, boo ya.

I selected some nice red wood, 2x6x6. I couldn't decide between a 2x4 or 3x3 garden box. I deferred the decision to kiddo, and he chose 3x3. He was feeling the square, no so much the rectangle.

With wood and screws all sorted out, kiddo and I headed off to the nursery. Six bags of soil and a variety of plants later this is what we came home with.....

The project loot.

With three sides up, it's starting to take shape.
Kiddo is pretty good with a power drill, he makes his mama proud.

Planted Pablano Chilies, Jalapeno Chilies, Eggplant, Pear Tomatoes, Red Onions, Butternut Squash and Finn's Pumpkin.

And viola, it's done.
Now lets just keep our fingers crossed I can keep every alive!!!!
Hee hee hee....

This garden box was unbelievably simple to make!!!
I can't wait to make more and finish my garden.

Guest Crafter

I am grateful to Wide Spread Crafting for letting me occasionally post.

I love all kinds of crafts as well. I am up for trying anything and have a lot of "hobbies". One of my hobbies turned me into a demonstrator for Stampin' Up! about 4 years ago. So the majority of my posts will be rubber stamping and using Stampin' Up! products.

I am also a big fan of Splitcoast Stampers. I love the step by step tutorials, swaps, rescources, and of course the daily posts from all those creative ladies, and men, out there. A lot of the techniques I use can be found on their website.

Keep checking back for more projects!
Thanks,
Shoni

Faux Stained Mosaic Cards

FAUX STAINED MOSAIC

I just did a class on a Faux Stained Mosaic technique, that I did get from Splitcoast Stampers. I saw this and had to try it.

I am one of those who has to keep "almost" every scrap. When I get a new set of stamps, you pop them out and mount them. What do you do with the left over rubber trimming? You make your own stamp!

Cut up the trimming into small squares, triangles, and any shapes you want. Adhere them to a piece of card stock of any shape until card stock is completely full.

Waola! Unique stamp made by you at no extra cost. You can use punches, diecuts, or your own designes for the card stock. I would suggest using a card board or a strong backing that is the same shape as your card stock to keep your stamp from flexing too much.

I used the Top Note Bigz Die to make these 3:

This card is using the large butterfly from the Beautiful Butterflies Bigz Die that I did for a swap:

Let me know if you would like any info on the materials, supplies and accessories used for any of these cards.

Thanks for letting me post!

Well lets get this thing started.

I love to make things, in all kinds of mediums, I have no preference. I am not necessarily artistic, but I love to craft. I'm hoping to chisel some time out of my full schedule to get crafting.
Maybe this blog will help me get moving.

The current project on my plate is to recover my Grandma's old couch for our new house. Do I sew? Not really. The last time I sewed was about ten years ago when I recovered a thrift store love seat. The last time I sewed before that was when I was a kiddo making tube dresses for my Barbies. I won't disclose how long ago that was!

So let the adventures begin.
